Workplace Gratitude – For The Boss Too?

“Gratitude” has been defined as an attitude, a virtue, or a character strength. While the concept of gratitude frequently appears in literature, prayers, and spiritual lessons, its application in the organizational setting is not as common.  Most of what is written on workplace gratitude is geared toward peers or as a way for employers to boost employee morale.  But what about the boss?

How often have you thanked your employer?  Not the “thank you for answering my question” or “thank you for getting me a cup of coffee” thanks, but rather the showing of genuine appreciation.

Lately everyone is doing more and getting less, and the boss is no exception.  They take the financial risk in hope it will pay off and they creates jobs.  They also have the added responsibility of providing for their employees.  I’ve never met a small business owner who didn’t feel protective about their staff.

When you think about your work relationships, don’t forget the boss.  Afterall, many people spend more waking time with their colleagues at work than with their families.  So to my each and every employer, past, present and future, my sincere thanks and appreciation!

2010, really?

It seems like the Y2K hoopla was just yesterday and yet we are poised to start the last year of the first decade in this century. In the upcoming year we at Web Feet and in the Lee family will hit some milestones. I will turn 50, my oldest daughter will turn 20 (I’m not getting old, I’m not get…) and Web Feet IM will enter its 10th year. Looking back it all appears in a flash, time becomes compressed and only big events stand out.

Sounds like a good system for saving hard drive space, get rid of the day-to-day stuff and keep the important or eventful. Of course we tend to do that in business as well and that can lead to blind spots. Small things that are not noticed by us anymore may stand out to our clients and potential clients for good or bad. Is the carpet clean, are they greeted warmly and multiple other small things may help or hurt our relationships.

This is the time of year when all of us in business need to step back a bit and look at our operations through the eyes of our clients. Here at Web Feet IM it is time for our annual SWOT analysis. This and other fundamental exercises help us see where we are and where we need to be in the upcoming year(s).

Here’s to a new year full of possibilities and milestones both personal and professional. Oh and by the way, I’m not getting old (right?).
