We all know it’s been tough economically for all sectors of the population. But what is it like for a teenager, many who have never had a job to spice up a résumé or the opportunity collect glowing letters of recommendation?
Help and plenty of advice is out there. In April 2010, Cuesta College, EDD and the Business and Career One-Stop centers in San Luis Obispo County are hosting three Youth Job and Resource Fairs in San Luis Obispo, Paso Robles and Grover Beach. The target age is 16-24.
Local employers will be on hand to offer advise on what they expect, how to fill out an application, what is appropriate interviewing attire and behavior (what do you do with that vibrating cell phone?). Other topics useful to youth, and available jobs and careers can also be researched. Employers will answer questions to inspire, encourage, and build confidence during these competitive and sometimes daunting times.
The first Youth Job and Resource Fair is Wednesday, April 21, 2010 from 5-7 pm at the SLO Business and Career One-Stop on 880 Industrial Way, off of Broad across from the Graduate. (805.903.1434)
The next two are both on Wednesday, April 28, 2010 from 5-7 pm. In South County, the Grover Beach Business and Career One -Stop is at 1800 E. Grand (805.270.3100). In North County, the Paso Robles Business and Career One-Stop is at Cuesta College North Campus, 2800 Buena Vista (805.237.3014).
Youth are invited to learn about the wonderful resources for job seekers at the Business and Career One-Stop centers, get that confidence needed to grab that interview and enjoy light refreshments! Please call the above numbers for further information and visit Career One-Stop at SLO-ONESTOP.NET.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
San Luis Obispo, CA – August 12, 2009 – As California wildfires continue to burn and local skies are filled with falling ash, vehicle owners are being warned of the potential damage the debris could cause to their exterior paint finish. The Automobile Club of Southern California is one of several sources encouraging owners to park their vehicles in the garage whenever possible for the duration of the fires, and to wash away any ash and soot to prevent paint damage.
This is especially important in our coastal climate, where overnight fog and dew are common. The elements in wood ash are inert and harmless in their dry form, but when mixed with moisture can result in harmful chemical etching. Vehicle owners in dry areas can safely brush away surface ash with a car duster, but those living in moist areas are encouraged to regularly wash their cars to preserve the finish – especially when the vehicles must be left outside overnight.
“With so much ash in the air these days, we’re seeing more and more people coming in for car washes to keep their paint looking like it should,” said Bart Devaney, owner of four Sunset North Car Wash locations in San Luis Obispo, Arroyo Grande and Paso Robles.
“If you take pride in your vehicle’s appearance, get it washed and keep it covered during fire season,” Devaney said.
Vehicle owners are also urged to remove ash from headlights and taillights for maximum visibility. When the smoky air clears, engine air filters and cabin ventilation filters should be inspected and replaced as needed, and owners may wish to wax their vehicles to reduce the effects of ash on the clear coat finish.

Local business helps groups raise $40,000/year
San Luis Obispo, CA – Sunset North Car Wash and Detail Center, with 4 locations in San Luis Obispo County, is welcoming applications from non-profit organizations, schools, churches, groups, clubs and charities for participation in the company’s FUN-Raiser Saturdays, a partnership program which returns an average of $40,000 per year to local community organizations.
The annual program operates on Saturdays from April through October. Sunset North Car Wash provides all the employees and services on these days, while participating organizations provide enthusiastic supporters who draw in customers in return for 15% of the day’s total sales.
Since beginning the FUN-Raiser Saturday program in 2005, Sunset North has returned nearly $165,000 to local partners. Joey Hughes, Executive Director of Camp Fire, partnered with sorority Gamma Phi Beta to raise over $1,000 for the Arroyo Grande organization. Hughes calls the FUN-Raiser Saturdays, “an easy fundraiser and a great way to build community and raise awareness about our programs.”
Sunset North Car Washes are located on Broad Street and Marsh Street in San Luis Obispo, Grand Avenue in Arroyo Grande, and 9th Street in Paso Robles.
More information about the Sunset North Car Wash FUN-Raiser Saturday program is available online at www.SunsetNorthCarWash.com. Applications for 2009 will be available in March.
